A FINAL TOAST
to Trygve Berge

BRECKENRIDGE

In Breckenridge, the mountains always call the shots—massive, steady, impossible to ignore. And yet, every so often, someone shows up who changes how we answer that call. Trygve Berge was one of those rare figures.

Passing just shy of his 94th birthday, Breckenridge didn’t just lose a founder—it says goodbye to a person whose vision, energy, and spirit became inseparable from the town itself. Trygve made it a place that feels alive, a town that belongs to anyone willing to show up with a sense of adventure.

Long before it was known as Breckenridge Ski Resort, Trygve saw something no one else did. At a time when Colorado skiing was still finding its footing, he helped build something that felt both ambitious and intuitive—a place where beginners could find their balance, experts could find their edge, and everyone in between could carve out their own relationship with the mountain.

That instinct—to create something inclusive without losing its sense of adventure—became the foundation of Breckenridge’s identity. It’s still there today, in every run that welcomes a first-timer and every line that challenges a lifelong skier. It’s in the rhythm of the mountain itself.

But Trygve’s legacy reaches far beyond the slopes.

He understood early on that a ski town is defined as much by culture as by vertical feet or snowfall totals—the moments after the boots come off, the stories shared, the traditions that bind people together. Few traditions capture that spirit better than Ullr Fest, the irreverent, snow-loving celebration he helped bring to life. What began as a playful nod to the Norse god of winter became something much bigger: a reflection of Breckenridge itself—welcoming, a little wild, and deeply connected to the season that defines it. Just like Trygve.

And then there’s the way he lived it—skis on, boots clicking in, into his 90s. Not for show, not for a photo op, but because that was who he was. The mountain he helped shape was never meant to be something you outgrow. It was meant to grow with you. Trygve lived that truth every day, proving that age is just a number when it comes to chasing turns and making memories.

Today, Breckenridge stands as a destination known around the world. The lifts are faster, the terrain broader, the reach global. But underneath all the upgrades and acclaim, it still feels like a town built for people—not just for stats. A place where the mountain invites you in, and the town makes you want to stay. That feeling? That’s Trygve’s imprint.

For us, Trygve was more than a legend — he was a mentor and a friend. His wisdom guided us when we needed direction, his encouragement lifted us when it mattered most, and his quiet, steady confidence reminded us that we were building something meaningful. Time spent with him felt like stepping into living history, while also inspiring us to create what comes next.

Trygve’s vision and artistry didn’t just shape Breckenridge — they shaped us. He showed us what it means to dream boldly, act with purpose, and leave a lasting impact.

So this is a toast—not just to what he built, but to how he built it. To the foresight it took to see big possibility in a mining town. To the balance he struck between growth and character. To the traditions he helped spark, and the community that continues to carry them forward.

Raise a glass wherever you are tonight—on the mountain, in a bar, or on your couch pretending you’re here. Take a moment to honor what was built, and the man who helped make it possible.

To Trygve Berge: thank you for the mountain, the culture, and the countless days that start with a lift ride and end with a story worth telling.
